Some say goaltenders are a different breed or ‘aren’t right in the head’. Goaltending is a tough position and it is not for everyone. Many people assume that it’s the easiest position to play, that you don’t need to be a strong skater, and that you don’t work as hard as everyone else.
On the contrary, goaltending is a very physical and mental position. I, myself, have had the opportunity to play every position. Starting out in Tyke as a forward, Novice as a defence man and Atom to present as a goaltender.
I’ve always had an interest for the position, but my mom tried to steer me away from it. She was always concerned about the pressure that the position brought to that individual. When she realized how much I enjoyed goaltending, we talked about how it was no different than any other player. You win or lose as a team; there’s no individual to blame.
Over the years in minor hockey, I found most of my coaches would just let the goalies play every other game. As I got older and played at a more competitive level, I found it beneficial to strengthen my skills by attending goalie schools and clinics throughout the year. Mentally balancing my confidence level was difficult. Losing a game was hard on me, but winning a game was very rewarding; getting a shutout was the ultimate goal.
I’ve had many achievements over the years, such as winning many regional Silversticks, an international title. I’ve been chosen to play with select teams and have been a part of a few All Star Teams. I was very fortunate to have been a part of a very strong Midget team in Mooretown, capturing and OMHA title in my last season of minor hockey.
I find myself basically starting over at the junior level. It’s not always easy not knowing when my next opportunity to play a game might be.
I am grateful that the Dresden Jr. Kings coaching staff have chosen me to be apart of this year’s team. My goal is to work hard every practice and game that I am able to play in.
Having Brendan Johnston as my goalie partner will also help me better my skills. He has played a a very high level of hockey and has helped me a lot these season already and will continue to help me both physically and mentally. Hopefully I can strengthen my skills and eventually be a starter goalie for the Dresden Jr. Kings.
